Description
TRANCYP TABLET is a prescription medication containing Tranylcypromine, a non-hydrazine monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), indicated for the management of major depressive episodes, particularly in cases where patients have shown inadequate response to other antidepressants like SSRIs or tricyclics.
TRANCYP acts by irreversibly inhibiting the monoamine oxidase enzyme, thereby increasing the levels of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain. These elevated neurotransmitter levels help alleviate the symptoms of severe or resistant depression.
This medication is often reserved for treatment-resistant cases due to the necessity for dietary restrictions and potential for drug interactions, and it is prescribed under close medical supervision.
Antidepressant – Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI)
Tranylcypromine irreversibly binds to and inhibits monoamine oxidase (types A and B), preventing the breakdown of neurotransmitters. This results in an increase in synaptic availability of mood-regulating chemicals, leading to improved emotional and cognitive function in depressive states.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Treatment-resistant depression
Atypical depression
Severe dysthymia (off-label, physician-directed use)
Effective in managing resistant depression
Useful where standard antidepressants have failed
Can improve both mood and motivation
May benefit anxiety symptoms in some patients
Long-lasting effect due to irreversible enzyme inhibition
Initial adult dose: 10 mg twice daily
May be increased to 30–60 mg/day in divided doses, based on response and tolerability
Effects may take 2–3 weeks to become fully apparent
Must be discontinued gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms
Strict dietary restrictions must be followed to avoid hypertensive crisis (avoid tyramine-rich foods)
Avoid combination with SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, and sympathomimetic agents
Contraindicated in patients with cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disorders, or pheochromocytoma
Not to be used within 14 days of other antidepressants
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Insomnia or restlessness
Dry mouth
